The Char Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage circuit consisting of four holy sites in Uttarakhand, India: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. * Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism, is home to a temple dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. * Gangotri, the source of the Ganges River, the holiest river in Hinduism, houses a temple dedicated to the goddess Ganga. * Kedarnath, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located at a height of over 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) above sea level, making it one of the highest Shiva temples in the world. * Badrinath, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is located at a height of over 3,100 meters (10,200 ft) above sea level. Considered a highly sacred pilgrimage for Hindus, completing the Char Dham Yatra is believed to help achieve moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Traditionally undertaken from west to east, starting with Yamunotri and ending with Badrinath, the journey can be made by road or helicopter. The best time to visit the Char Dham is during the summer months (April to June) when the weather is pleasant and the roads are open. However, keep in mind that the high-altitude shrines are closed for the winter months (November to April) due to heavy snowfall.
